When
Coaching could be something for you if it is not yet completely clear what is needed to make things better. Or, in case this is clear, why it isn’t happening. Especially in the beginning an exploring attitude is important, combined with acknowledging the assets in the existing situation.
How
Coaching can take place in different ways, but it always takes shape in relatively short interventions, varying from an e-mail exchange to a conversation while taking a walk, or an archery session. All of these approaches have their own characteristics and values.
Solution Focused
In the development field it is often tempting to focus on addressing problems. However, it is more effective, after a thorough problem and wish analysis, to focus on the positive forces and available sources for help. That approach unleashes more power, and allows more freedom to move. Experience has shown that fewer sessions are needed to get results faster with this approach: it is more cost effective.
Experiential Education
The coaching sessions are based on the experiences of the coachee. Together we discover patterns by closely looking at events at work, at home, during an archery session. These are not only patterns in what happens, but also in the way you observe these events and patterns in filtering information out. This will offer more than enough opportunities to change.
When not
Do not offer coaching if there is an ostensible lack of knowledge or skills. Fixed circumstances are not necessarily a contra-indication for coaching. Coaching can often help in dealing with these circumstances.
