Sometimes a good conversation can help to see possibilities that one doesn’t see alone. Taking a walk together and talking things through is a good combination to move ahead.
The old Greeks already knew this and used it to their advantage. In Athens there were the peripatoi, the shaded colonnades of the lyceum, where Aristotle and his students had their reflections while walking.
Coaching conversations often have a motivating and confirming character: as soon as a person is capable of formulating a wish, they are probably taking the right actions to get there, but unconsciously (e.g. see Damasio). It is my task to help people become consciously aware of their successful behavior. Once they are aware, they can more easily and more effectively deploy their resources.
Coaching can also be done on the job, at the workplace. When delivering internal audit training, this type of coaching-on-the-job during a real internal audit is a standard follow up for the training.
